Markdown Mondays: The Perfect Fall Outfit
Whenever I go through someone’s wardrobe as part of my Wardrobe/Closet Edit Service, we’re always looking to construct a few outfits for various occasions that can become the “outfit formula” & serve as inspiration for creating more looks of a similar kind. This approach to wardrobe building makes getting dressed in the morning easy and fun, and helps my clients create up an outfit arsenal and train their eye fro proper elements that create what we call “the perfect outfit” – one that observes the right proportions, fits the body & dressing occasion and has enough focus & detail without looking busy.
For this week’s #MarkdownMondays collage, I’ve worked on creating the “perfect Fall outfit” where all the elements are in place. You can use this formula and apply it to your closet as well.
We start with a great pair of jeans – for this look I chose these Mother Runaway Mid-Rise Fray Jeans from Anthropologie. As much as I’m a huge fan of skinny jeans – I think they flatter almost any figure, and are easy to match with most types of shoes – there is something quite elegant and very flattering about a slight boot-cut/flare bottom. This pair by one of my favorite brands is high-waisted and incorporates one of this season’s denim trends: frayed bottom. It pairs well with heeled shoes (my favorite would be a bootie or these JCrew Lena Suede Pumps with Patent Cap Toe in “dark cognac” (brown) color, which are also included in this style collage). Other shoes that would work well are these adorable Rag & Bone open-toe”Mabel” heeled booties, made of Italian calf suede with a comfortable 4″ heel that were a part of last week’s #MarkdownMondays digest.
The perfect outfit also needs just the right top. Whenever I’m working with a high-waisted silhouette in bottoms, I’m all for tucking in the tops to create an illusion of a defined waist. This Rebecca Taylor Silk Bellflower Button-Front Blouse from SAKS is great – as it can be worn both tucked and un-tucked – and the elegant collar and sleeves along with a pretty floral print make it quite darling and versatile (work appropriate but fun for weekend too). I chose it in this “navy combo” color but it also comes in “blush combo”, available here.
As layering is an important aspect of any Fall outfit, I’ve chosen this Brushed Plaid Coat from Ann Taylor for the look – it’s great to wear over jeans, slacks, skirts or dresses. It comes in both regular and petite sizes, and the hidden-snap closure and funnel neck collar make it elegant & polished. It’s also currently 50% off regular price!
And, as always, what’s a perfect outfit without the perfect bag? Kate Spade is often my go-to brand for an affordably-luxurious purse silhouette, and this Cameron Street Blakely has a surprising number of pockets and an iconic shape. It also comes with a cross-body strap – allowing you to be hands-free when needing to take that selfie in the work elevator to show off your perfect Fall look on your Instagram 😉
