How to Rock a Sweater & Jean Skirt like a French Girl for Fall
Before I start sharing holiday looks in my next few upcoming posts, I wanted to finish off Fall 2019 with this great outfit that’s perfect for every-day, and features one of my favorite brands as of late – Sézane. I’ve talked about how the vibe of the brand and their designs really resonate with me – giving me a feeling of “french girl chic” whenever I wear them. The most important aspect of styling these types of pieces is to achieve the ideal balance of “casual” and “polished” — a lot of which comes from tucking and draping. In this look, I’m sharing a “diagonal tuck” trick that french girls love (which has also been coined “french tuck”) — it looks disheveled enough to not look too prim-and-proper, but still appears purposeful and alluring.
The exact ingredients of this outfit formula are:
- The Sweater. I’m in love with some many of the Sézane sweaters this Season, and have styled my clients in quite a few, as well as purchased them for myself, but I think this Solal Jumper in Ecru is my favorite. It’s cozy, not itchy, and has intricate details without too much fuss or weight. It tucks in well too – which is always a plus. It’s great with a denim skirt (as featured) or with jeans, slacks or over a pleated skirt or dress. It’s no doubt going to be on repeat this Fall/Winter!
- The Denim Skirt. This new skirt from La Vie by Rebecca Taylor ticks a lot of boxes: it’s high-waisted, it has pockets and it’s a great length to wear with leggings/tights and booties. It also is Season-less — and will wear just as well with a tee as it will with a sweater + coat.
- A Feminine Bag. As I’m a big fan of rose pink, this bag immediately caught my eye. I really adore See by Choe Bags and Shoes – they take a lot of the luxury elements of Chloe bags/shoes, but are available at a much more approachable price point (this bag is ~$300 vs $800-2K that a similar Chloe Bag will run). The hardware on this mini Hana Saddle Shoulder Bag makes it feel more refined, and I am always into the cross-body strap to make it more versatile. It’s also available in a multitude of colors – see below!
- Extra Booties. I styled one of my clients in these Yanila Buckle Booties at the opening of the new Nordstrom in NYC – and loved the way they looked so much that I had to get a pair! They are from a recent collaboration by Mark Fisher LTD x Elizabeth Sulcer (a celebrity stylist) who designed them exclusively for the opening of the new NYC Nordstrom and the Perfect Pairs program. They’re made of genuine calf hair, available in black and in this fun black and white snow leopard print. They have side zip + zip detail, monk strap & buckle, and pointy toe – very comfortable, chic and creative. They spice up a simple jeans + sweater look and bonus points if you can coordinate with your bag too for extra impact!
I hope this inspires you to try out a similar look for Fall! Please feel free to share the outfits you create via Instagram, using hashtag #ModnitsaOutfit in your posts, and I’ll be sure repost them on my stories!
